MICHAEL IGNATIEFF PROMISES TO TAKE ACTION IN THE COFFIN AFFAIR

Following a meeting, the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Michael Ignatieff had with members of the Wilbert Coffin family, at Gaspé, on August 2nd 2009, here is what he had to say to the press regarding the fight that the family has engaged in clearing Wilbert Coffin’s name. The following words were gathered by the journalist Thierry Haroun :

I was moved by the meeting I had with the Coffin family. I was very moved by the Coffin family’s devotion in its pursuit to clear Wilbert Coffin’s reputation and name. I did not make any empty promises. I only said that I would study the file and do what I can to help that family because what is moving is that for about 50 years it has sought to reverse all that. And if someone tries for 50 years, this means that there was something to be found. It means that there was something that was not correct and this must be addressed. But I do not want to make empty promises. I say that I will study this dossier thoroughly and we will take action.
